Georgia Power

Georgia Power’s outage page has the outage map, the online reporting form and alert sign-up. For a downed line, the company says to call 911 or 1-888-891-0938 so the line can be made safe, and to never go near it: assume any downed line is live and keep children and pets away.

Who gets power back first. According to Georgia Power’s restoration process:

  1. Vital community services: hospitals, emergency and public safety services, military installations, and water and wastewater stations.
  2. Repairs that restore the greatest number of customers in the least time.
  3. Smaller lines, down to individual lines in neighborhoods.

Cobb EMC

Cobb EMC says it serves nearly 200,000 residential and commercial consumers in Cobb, Bartow, Cherokee, Fulton and Paulding counties. Its office is at 1000 EMC Parkway, Marietta.

Why restoration can take time

Georgia Power’s restoration page lists what slows crews down after a storm:

  • Crews cannot start until conditions are safe, including wind speeds up in the bucket truck.
  • A damage assessment team first inspects each scene for downed lines, trees and debris, and that inspection sets the estimated restoration time.
  • Lines touching water, metal or buildings must be shut down first, and fallen trees often have to be cleared before line crews can reach the damage.
  • Blocked roads can keep crews out; the company asks drivers to move over for its crews, which it says is the law in Georgia.

If your meter is damaged. Georgia Power says it cannot restore power to a home whose meter or service entrance is damaged until a certified electrician repairs it; crews leave a door hanger. When the repair is done, call 1-877-749-3931 to schedule reconnection.

Weather warnings for Cobb County come from the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City; see the forecast on our home page.
